Training gives community researchers
the skills, understanding and confidence to undertake fieldwork
in their community. The module Action Research in the Community
was developed for the Pembrokeshire SHARP Project by the Pembrokeshire
Association of Voluntary Services and accredited by the Open
College Network. The course covers topics such as interview
skills, communication skills and personal safety. Ideally,
three days should be spent in training before fieldwork.
Group sessions should continue during fieldwork to discuss
any issues as they arise: practical problems; research questions;
personal experiences. Community researchers can support each
other and share experiences which will inform the ongoing
research.
The Open College Network accreditation uses the information
recorded in the community research as evidence of skills demonstrated
and tasks undertaken. Researchers found the system values
information which would already be produced as part of a job,
rather than create another layer of evidence and paperwork.
They reported pride in receiving a qualification recognising
their input and learning.
Information about OCN training is available from www.nocn.org.uk
The Community Researcher handbook (link to training section
of handbook – yet to be completed) includes a section
about the training followed in the Pembrokeshire SHARP Project.
