This action research project is evaluating a Healthy
Living Approach to community development. It is divided into
these main stages: Forming
a healthy living forum
Supporting community identification of needs
Disseminating local action plans
Research Evaluation
|
Forming
a healthy living forum
|
|
The healthy living forum is
a community organisation working to promote local health
and wellbeing. In a community where no organised community
activity existed, the SHARP researcher brought local people
together, helped them form a group and gave advice or
support as required.
|
| Supporting
community identification of needs |
 |
Local people were recruited
and trained in basic interview techniques before undertaking
semi-structured interviews with residents in their homes.
Some community researchers were also forum members. These
taped interviews, exploring health and social issues,
were transcribed and analysed. The results were used by
forum members to draw up local action plans. The plans
set out community proposals to respond to the issues raised
by residents. |
| Disseminating
local action plans |
 |
The action plans are disseminated
to statutory and voluntary organisations with responsibility
for, or interest in, the community issues and proposals.
The aim is to seek implementation of proposals in order
to address the locally identified needs. |
Research Evaluation |
 |
The research project is evaluating
whether this Healthy Living Approach has an impact on
health, for example:
- Do residents report any difference in their quality
of life
- Are residents aware of issues, action plans and
any changes
- What is the impact on those involved in the project
(forum members, community researchers, other partners)
- What, if any, changes occur or are planned as a
result of action plans
- How do community and statutory organisations work
together on a project like this
